Week 2: Cold Nights, Hot Team

April 9 - April 15: Seattle loses its first game of the season but turns right around to win the next 5.

  • Seattle 6, Minnesota 17. Seattle loses for the first time as the Berserkers demolish Sasquatch pitching. 18-year old über-prospect Peter Blanchard goes 3-4 and scores 4 runs.
  • Seattle 7, Minnesota 2. The Frozen Tundra lives up to its name: the game is played at freezing temperatures and amid light snow flurries. Dave Sharp has another strong outing (7 IP, 2 ER, 5 H, 0 BB, 3 K). Salvador Salgado and Alex Morrison homer.
  • Seattle 7, Minnesota 6. Down 1 run with 2 outs in the top of the 9th, Salgado singles and Francisco Alfonso homers to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat.
  • Seattle 8, Ann Arbor 4. Edgar Johnson, fresh off the DL, makes his Seattle debut and homers. Steve Frend goes 2-5 with a HR and 5 RBI.
  • Seattle 3, Ann Arbor 1. Alfonso hits 2 home runs. Bob Rudyard earns his 3rd win (8 IP, 1 ER, 4 H, 0 BB, 4 K).
  • Seattle 7, Ann Arbor 4. Ann Arbor commits 4 errors, including 2 in the 8th that allow 2 runs to score.
Notes: Rudyard has now pitched 22 innings without allowing a walk. . . . With 3 home runs this week and 6 on the season, Alfonso takes over the team lead. . . . Allen Robbins continued his perfect run as closer: he has 6 saves in as many chances and has yet to allow a run. . . . The injury bug reached the minor leagues as 2 top prospects go down. Albuquerque LF José Parra broke a bone in his elbow when diving for a catch: he will be out for 5 months. Silicon Valley 1B Quincy Peterson will miss 4 weeks after tearing his hip flexor tendon.

Next Week: Seattle returns home to play Montgomery in the season's first divisional series, then travels to Kansas City for the season's first interleague series.
