Week 1: Seattle Sweeps, Salgado Slugs

April 2 - April 8, 2012: Seattle opens the 2012 season by sweeping Nottinghamshire and Greenville.

  • Nottinghamshire 4, Seattle 16. Opening Day.
  • Nottinghamshire 3, Seattle 6. Salvador Salgado hits a 2-run home run. Larry Thomas pitches 6 2/3 innings and gives up 3 runs, 2 earned, but Jimmy Sheppard gets the win by throwing 9 pitches.
  • Nottinghamshire 0, Seattle 6. Dave Sharp and Sheppard combine on a shut out. In the 7th inning, Salgado and Francisco Alfonso hit back-to-back home runs: Salgado's is a grand slam, the first in Sasquatch history.
  • Seattle 3, Greenville 2. Alfonso hits a 2-run home run in the 6th.
  • Seattle 8, Greenville 3. Steve Frend goes 4-4 with 1 HR, 1 BB, and 3 RBI. Nolan Lyons pitches 5 2/3 innings of shut-out baseball, striking out 8. In the bottom of the 4th, Greenville's William Kirby goes in hard at second base, trying to break up the double play. He collides with Seattle's Derrick Meadows, who suffers a torn labrum and will miss 4 months.
  • Seattle 1, Greenville 0. Bob Rudyard (7 IP, 5 H, 0 BB, 8 K) gets his 2nd win as he and the bullpen combine to shut out the Hornets.
Notes: Salgado earns RCL Player of the Week: he goes 11-22 with 4 HR, 5 BB, 7 R, 13 RBI. . . . Other star hitters include Alfonso (12-26, 1 BB, 5 R, 3 HR, 8 RBI) and Frend (11-25, 3 BB, 8 R, 2 HR, 5 RBI). . . . Seattle's pitching gives up only 10 ER all week. . . . Rudyard earns 2 wins (14 IP, 2 ER, 0 BB, 14 K).

Next Week: Seattle continues a 9-game road trip by traveling to the upper Midwest and facing Minnesota and Ann Arbor. . . . Star CF Edgar Johnson comes off the DL and makes his Sasquatch debut.
